Fine Tune Your Focus as We Head into a New Year
As we head into a new year it’s time to assess and evaluate our values and priorities. The way you spend your time should be informed by your priorities, and your priorities should be based upon your values. If you feel there is a disconnect between the way you spend your time and your values-based priorities, create some space to ask yourself the following questions:
What are the three main values that define my life? If you don’t know, spend time with the question and determine what you want your main values to be.
Once you are clear about your values look at your calendar. Do you prioritize your time based upon your values? If not, why not?
What changes can you make heading into the new year to ensure you spend your time guided by what is most important to you?
Another way to put all of this: if you knew you were going to die tomorrow, would you be at peace with yourself knowing you did the best you could to live according to what is most important to you?
Seth Goodin puts this well: “You don’t need more time you need better choice.” We all have 24 hours each day and we all make choices, actively or by default, regarding how we spend our days, weeks and years.
Be mindful of what you might be able to remove from your calendar before you start thinking about what you might add in support of your values. Look at a typical month in 2025 and analyze the percentage of your time spent on each type of activity and then make adjustments to how you prioritize your time, informed by your values, heading into the New Year.
