Let’s Stop Villainizing Unions - Talk to Your People Instead

About 10% of American workers currently belong to a union or are represented by one in their workplace. At the same time about 60% of American workers are interested in having a union enter their workplace. That is an important data point and one that should not be ignored by leaders in most organization settings.

What is behind the fact that a high percentage of American workers would welcome union representation in their workplace? They want to feel heard and recognized for what they want out of work and workplaces.

What are the concerns workers have that they feel aren’t being met? The same ones we continue to hear about - wanting more control of work schedules, DEI concerns, training and development opportunities, flexibility around when and how they work. Employees are also very concerned about how AI will impact them. They want to be trained to utilize AI appropriately and they want to know it won’t take their jobs.

Instead of seeing unions as adversaries, how about talking to union leadership and employees to hear their demands?

Retaining employees with or without a union representative is all about creating great cultures. It is impossible to overstate how important it is to intentionally build a culture which makes your people feel valued and heard.
